And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.  (1 Kings 1:6)

Rod, reproof, restriction.  All essential to bringing up children in the strength and admonition of the Lord.

Sadly lacking in our culture today.  We have forgotten, or rather ignored, the Scriptural mandate to train up our children in the way they should go.  We have, as a nation/culture, abdicated our responsibility to daycares or public education.  We are reaping the harvest of our own doing.  God forgive us.

David, while a man after God's own heart, gives us ample example of what NOT to do in bringing up children.  Father, please forgive us where we fall short, or are derelict in our duties to bring up children to fear You.  Lord, cause us to turn from serving our selves and desire to be an example of godly parenthood to our children and grandchildren.

And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him. But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.  (1 Kings 1:7-8)

As I continued reading Joab was slain, as was Abiathar.  As I typed this in, it just occurred to me, would they not have known the calling of God for Solomon to be king?  Why would they not wait to see who David would appoint?  Or just assumed that Adonijah was next up.  God keep us from assuming anything about You or Your plans.  Help us Lord not to turn to the right or the left, but to stay completely stayed upon Thee and Thy Word.
