They thought killing the king would garner them favor with David...nooooo....David set the example about honoring headship and waiting on the Lord's timing. And dealt justly with those who committed murder - especially against an unarmed man, in bed.

List of those warriors who made David king - 1 Chronicles 12:23-40
All Israel united under David after 7.5 years of rebellion. 7.5 years, that is a long time. Does anyone know how many years did David spend running from Saul, persecuted for being God's chosen man?
