[Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah - Many years ago a friend mentioned that everyone remembers the Babylonian names for three of the Hebrews taking into captivity, but rarely their Israelite names. Why is that? Daniel appears to keep his name throughout scripture, yet Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah shift from being called by their given names, unto the pagan names. I have always wondered if this was an indicator of some compromise on their part. I hesitate to state this because they were so fervent in standing up to the king and NOT bowing to the image of gold, willing to suffer death in a fiery furnace rather than compromise their allegiance to the one true God.
Daniel = H1840 from H1835 (judge) and H410; (strength) judge of God; Daniel or Danijel;
Belteshazzar - H1095 - of foreign derivation (not much help from the dictionary on that one!);
Hananiah - H2608 From H2603 (bend) and H3050; (Jah, the sacred name) Jah has favored; Chananjah;
Shadrack - H7714 - of foreign derivation;
Mishael - H4332 From H4310 (who?) and H410 (strength) with the abbreviation inceptively relative (see H834) interposed; who (is) what God (is)?; Mishael,
Meshach - H4335 Borrowed from H4336; ((Chaldee); of foreign origin and doubtful signification), the Meshak (heh, borrowed no less);
Azariah - H5838 From H5826 (A primitive root; to surround, that is, protect or aid) and H3050; Jah has helped; Azarjah;
Abednego - H5664 The same as H5665; ((Chaldee); of foreign origin; Abed-Nego, the name of Azariah Abed-Nego).]
Urijah martyred - Jeremiah 26:20-24 - Think about this...Urijah prophesied against the city - same as Jeremiah, yet God, in HIS providence allowed Urijah (jah, the sacred name) him to be martyred. Father allows what HE wants...when HE wants and how HE wants. All to HIS glory!
Jeremiah laments Jehoiakim - Jeremiah 22:13-19
Jeremiah and Bauch proclaim a fast - Jeremiah 36:9
Nebuchadnezzar's dream and Daniel's interpretation - Daniel 2:1-49 (and we thought we had some tough jobs! Can you imagine the pressure? I wonder, did Daniel end up saving the necks of those who would eventually persecute and try to have him killed off?)
Word of God read, destroyed, then restored - Jeremiah 36:10-32
Jeremiah's message continues - Jeremiah 13:1-27
The drought - Jeremiah 14:1-22; 15:1-21
