Day 235
Prophecy concerning Jerusalem's destruction, Jeremiah in dungeon - Jeremiah 34:1-7; 38:1-27
Prophecy to the Ethiopian - Jeremiah 39:15-18 - Scripture does not record his concern, nor any auditory plea made for clemency. Yet, Father knew his need and met him and reassured him. He knows our need before we even ask. He hears our silent pleas for protection. Thank you Lord for your provision.
Fall of Jerusalem - Jeremiah 38:28
Famine prevails - 2 Kings 25:3; Jeremiah 52:6
Babylonian princes come - Jeremiah 39:2-3
Zedekiah flees - his flight - 2 Kings 5:4; Jeremiah 39:4; 52:7 - he listened not....how well are we listening to the prophets (the Word)?
Pursuit and capture by Chaldeans - 2 Kings 25:5; Jeremiah 39:5; 52:8
Many killed - 2 Chronicles 36:17
He and his sons carried to Riblah - Jeremiah 52:9 {Map: bibleatlas.org/riblah.htm}
Sons slain - Jeremiah 39:6; 52:10
Eyes put out, deported to Babylon, predicted - Ezekiel 12:13-14
Happened - 2 Kings 25:6-7; Jeremiah 39:7; 52:11
~*~*~*~*~*
Jeremiah 38:6 - Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
Mire - H2916 - From an unused root meaning apparently to be sticky (rather perhaps a denominative from H2894, through the idea of dirt to be swept away); mud or clay; figuratively calamity: - clay, dirt, mire.
What must he have been thinking? I always assumed mire meant something else...refuse of some sort...sunk (H2883 - A primitive root; to sink: - drown, fasten, settle, sink.) To my mind this implies....depth...ugggh....and yet in this adversity he stayed true to HIS God...refusing to speak anything but Father's Words.
License to Lie?
Jeremiah 38:26-27 - Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there. Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.
We had a teaching on the 9th commandment - several in fact. How the midwives were rewarded for lying, as was Rahab, because it was done to protect innocent life. In this case, who is Jeremiah protecting? Himself? The king? That is a ponderable...hmmmm...
