Day 131
Reaction to David's death in Egypt - 1 Kings 11:21-22
His princes and officers - 1 Kings 4:1-28
Solomon builds (20 years)
- Preparations for building; decides to begin, league with Hiram - 1 Kings 5:1-12; 1 Kings 7:13; 2 Chronicles 2:1-16
- Taxes, laborers, and supplies - 1 Kings 5:13-18; 2 Chronicles 2:2; 2 Chronicles 2:17-18
- Execution of Shimei - 1 Kings 2:39-46 - ahhh...he was told not to leave Jerusalem and did and brought about his own death for disobedience.
- Instructions about God's ideal woman - Proverbs 31 - This Proverb always invokes the image of a perfect woman...but as I browsed through Matthew Poole's commentary it struck me that the first few verses are directed at the menfolk. Specifically:
1-5 - Lesson concerning chastity and temperance;
6- 7 - The proper use of wine;
8-9 - An exhortation to righteous judgment;
10 - A description of a virtuous wife;
11 - Her husband's confidence in her;
12-20 - Her work and careful provision for her household;
21-22 - Furniture and clothing;
23-29 - The properties and praise of a good wife;
30-31 - The vanity of beauty; the good are to be praised.
We are ever drawing closer to our God and desiring to give a proper estimate of who HE is in what we say, do and think...or at least we should be striving for that goal. We all fall short, and this is not a call to be perfect, but to grow in our sanctification.
