o. Prophecy concerning Israel's future, blessings or cursings ahead - Deuteronomy 28:1-68
{pages 326-330}

Blessings -  H1293 - From H1288; benediction; by implication prosperity.

Blessed- H1288 - A primitive root; to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration), and (vice-versa) man (as a benefit); also (by euphemism) to curse (God or the king, as treason).

Verses 1-14 has blessed listed 6 times and blessings twice.

Curses - H7045 - From H7043; vilification.
  • H7043 - A primitive root; to be (causatively make) light, literally (swift, small, sharp, etc.) or figuratively (easy, trifling, vile, etc.).

Cursed - H779 - A primitive root; to execrate.

Cursing - H3994 - From H779; an execration.

Curses listed twice, cursed 6 times, and cursing once in verses 15-68.

A few of the curses caught my attention:

And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.  (Deuteronomy 28:23)

Gill's commentary:

And the heaven that is over thy head shall be brass,.... Or like brass, not for its clearness, brightness, and splendour, or for its being spread out like a molten looking glass which was of brass, Job_37:18; but for its dryness and hardness, no moisture being in it, or passing through it; no showers of rain nor dew being let down from it:

and the earth that is under thee shall be iron; or like iron, hard and impenetrable, into which the plough and spade will not enter; nor anything spring out of it, for want of rain and dew to moisten and soften it. The same is said in Lev_26:19; only there is an inversion of the figures; there the heaven is said to be as iron, and the earth like brass, but signify the same thing.

In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.  (Deuteronomy 28:67)

In the morning thou shalt say, would God it were even,.... Wishing they might get through the day well, fearing their life would be taken away before night, or some sad calamity befall them before the day was past:

and at even thou shall say, would God it were morning; dreading what would happen to them in the night, that some messenger of death would be sent to dispatch them, or they should be haled out of bed to a court of inquisition, and cast into a dungeon:

for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which, thou shalt see; often beholding such dreadful sights, as their countrymen put upon the rack, and cruelly tortured, and then burnt alive; and so their hearts would fear and tremble, lest they should be the next that would be taken up and used in this manner; besides other severities and hard usages, with which their brethren were treated, and they in continual fear of.

Though all of the curses are sad, the saddest is the fruit of the womb (18), the enslavement of offspring (32) the 'eating' of offspring (53-57).

Children are a heritage from the Lord.  Distressingly in this season of time, children are not seen as a blessing, but a burden.  A nation that kills its young or disdains to raise up the next generation is in decline, if not, complete annihilation.

Prayerfully seeking Father to turn us from our wickedness, to give us a desire to ask for HIS blessing.

I found this video encouraging, praying that Father will open the blind eyes and deaf ears of the people, giving a heart to cry out to Him for salvation.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.  (2 Chronicles 7:14)
