Aaron died in the 1st day of the of the fifth month in the 40th year. All those numbers in one sentence. :-)
And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel. (Numbers 20:29)
mourned - H1058 - A primitive root; to weep; generally to bemoan.
The word 'mourned' is used 18 times in the OT, H1058 is used 114 times. First instance in Genesis 21:16 And she (Hagar) went and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him and lift up her voice, and wept.
Last usage in Zechariah 7:3 - And speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?
Interesting, 5th month reference.
Why 30 days? Henry's commentary:
6. All the congregation mourned for Aaron thirty days, Num_20:29. Though the loss was well made up in Eleazar, who, being in the prime of life, was fitter from public service that Aaron would have been if he had lived, yet it was a debt owing to their deceased high priest to mourn for him. While he lived, they were murmuring at him upon all occasions, but now that he was dead they mourned for him. Thus many are taught to lament the loss of those mercies which they would not learn to be thankful for the enjoyment of. Many good men have had more honour done to their memories than ever they had to their persons, witness those that were persecuted while they lived, but when they were dead had their sepulchres garnished.
All so sadly true, people will send flowers and make great lament over one who has passed on, yet the person who truly loved would have given due benevolence during the person's lifetime, not once they are dead in order to be seen of men. If you would like to read an overview of Miriam, Aaron and Moses.
Serpent of Brass - And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. (Numbers 21:8)
fiery serpent - H8314 - From H8313; burning, that is, (figuratively) poisonous (serpent); specifically a saraph or symbolical creature (from their copper color).
Deu 2:14 And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.
I was trying to figure out the 40 years...if I have tracked properly Israel spent a year at the mount (they had 2 Passover feasts). Searching....Gill's commentary:
until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; that is, from the time that the spies were sent and searched the land, and brought a report of it; for they were sent from Kadeshbarnea, Num_32:8 unto the passage of the Israelites over Zered, were thirty eight years; so long they had been travelling in the wilderness, after they were come to the borders of the land:
- H8313 - A primitive root; to be (causatively set) on fire.
- H5264 - A primitive root; to gleam from afar, that is, to be conspicuous as a signal; or rather perhaps a denominative from H5251 (and identical with H5263, through the idea of a flag as fluttering in the wind); to raise a beacon.

Which would seem to indicate that Israel was granted time 'spent' in wilderness wandering prior to their rejection of the promised land?
Nothing like brain strain...lol...found this site, which is quite informative. This will be one I need to go back and review, especially his calendars.
This article by Chuck Missler has some interesting examples, I especially liked the phrase, "It took 40 hours to get Israel out of Egypt, it took 40 years to get Egypt out of Israel."
Which made me think about how Egypt is a 'type' representing the world or bondage. I chuckled as I thought about how we all are pilgrims, on a journey through this 'world' and how Father is constantly removing the dross (sin) out of our lives. Always purging and refining us to be more conformed into HIS image.
Lord, grant us, Your people a desire to not be like Israel, grumbling, murmuring and complaining as we journey onward to our Promised Land. Help us Lord to ever desire the manna that only You can provide and to be content with what You provide in and through our journey.
