"The Puritans were not interested in entertaining listeners, as “preachers” are today. They focused on 3 main ingredients,

1) To read the text from the Bible and then expound on the plain meaning from the text;

2) To note and discuss a few key points of doctrine from the text; and

3) to apply those doctrines to the life of the believer. 

They loved the Word of God so much, and cared for the souls of their listeners, that they preached just the Word."

Would that the Bride of Christ were desirous of being washed in the Word with such width, breadth and depth.
