Day 157-11

Thought it interesting that both the Northern and Southern kingdom had Abijah's.

Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?  (2 Chronicles 13:5)

Covenant of salt?

Gill - even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? that is, a perpetual one, which was inviolable, and never to be made void; called so, because salt preserves from corruption and putrefaction, and because made use of in sacrifices offered when covenants were made; the Targum is,"as salt waters, which never lose their saltness.''

Okay...so searching for that exact phrase...

All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.  (Numbers 18:19)

That was the only other verse with the exact wording.  Looking for a variation:

And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.  (Leviticus 2:13)

I found this site, which appeared to be reasonably okay, until the last few paragraphs, so reader beware.

Most of the sites I came across (some were not worth sharing) quoted this verse. Wonderful encouragement:

Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.  (Colossians 4:6)
