~*~*~NOTE -Outline is taken from the Reese Chronological Bible~*~*~

David lies to King Achish...and he believes David.

And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.  And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines. And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.   (1 Samuel 27:10-12)

JFB commentary on 10:

Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to-day? — that is, raid, a hostile excursion for seizing cattle and other booty.

David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites — Jerahmeel was the great-grandson of Judah, and his posterity occupied the southern portion of that tribal domain.

the south of the Kenites — the posterity of Jethro, who occupied the south of Judah (Jdg_1:16; Num_24:21). The deceit practiced upon his royal host and the indiscriminate slaughter committed, lest any one should escape to tell the tale, exhibit an unfavorable view of this part of David’s history.

Wesley on 10:

David - These and the following words are ambiguous, and contrary to that simplicity which became David, both as a prince, and as an eminent professor of the true religion. The fidelity of Achish to him, and the confidence he put in him, aggravates his sin in thus deceiving him, which David seems penitently to reflect on, when he prays, Remove from me the way of lying.

Which made me go back and look.  :-)

Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously.  (Psalm 119:29)

Lord, help us all to guard are lips and remove any deception from our hearts and minds.

I thought it intriguing that David was willing to go to battle WITH Achish against Israel and Saul.  In a difficult situation.  Claiming allegiance to Achish, yet unwilling to have killed Saul on two other occasions when the opportunity was available.  Now going into battle against Saul AND Jonathan.  David was in the rereward with Achish...and the lords of the Philistines did not want David anywhere near them in the battle.

Okay, so what is rereward?

rereward - H314 - From H309; hinder; generally late or last; specifically (as facing the east) western.
  • H309 - A primitive root; to loiter (that is, be behind); by implication to procrastinate.
Nothing quite like a rabbit trail.  Though the article I found did not give me any real additional insight into the rereward, it was thought provoking and encouraging.

A brief quote:

"On the contrary, the children of God hear the sound of war; the shrill clarion is constantly sounding in their ears; they are compelled to carry with them the sword and the shield, and constantly to gird their armor on, for they are not yet come to the land of peace; they are in an enemy's country, and every day will convince them that such is their position."

So fellow warriors in Christ Jesus, have ye donned your armour this day?

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.  (Ephesians 6:10-20)
