Day 7

III The Age of The Patriarchs - 1967-1606 B.C. ~ cont.
A. Job ~ cont.
2. Job and his three friends ~ cont.
b. First round of speeches ~ cont. - Job 9:1-35; 10:1-22; 11:120; 12:1-25; 13:1-28; 14:1-22

The word daysman in verse 33 of chapter 9. I browsed through Gill, Henry and then settled on Jamison, Fossett and Brown's commentary:

daysman — “mediator,” or “umpire”; the imposition of whose hand expresses power to adjudicate between the persons. There might be one on a level with Job, the one party; but Job knew of none on a level with the Almighty, the other party (1Sa_2:25). We Christians know of such a Mediator (not, however, in the sense of umpire) on a level with both - the God-man, Christ Jesus (1Ti_2:5).

Liked Wesley's as well:

Days - man - Or, umpire. Lay his hand - Order and govern us in pleading; and oblige us to stand to his decision. Our Lord Jesus is now the blessed days - man, who has mediated between heaven and earth, has laid his hand upon us both: to him the father hath committed all judgment. But this was not made so clear then, as it is now by the gospel, which leaves no room for such a complaint as this.

Day 1- In the Beginning

A note before we begin ~ I will outline each day's reading.  I will allow Father to direct if I am to share any of my 'nuggets.'  As I begin this Roman new year, I look forward joyfully to the wonderful delights Father may have in store.  This will be my twelfth year of reading through HIS-story.  Each year reading the 'difficult' passages becomes easier and easier (think lists of names - more on that later).  I am wonderfully blessed by Father as I partake of HIS Word each year and find deeper and richer discoveries.  May those who are journeying with me be as richly blessed.  ~

Reese gives 2 options for the creation week.  I am going to list it as I read it.  I can not rationalize how God could proclaim everything 'good' and Satan have rebelled.  :-)

Eternity Past
A. The pre-existent Christ - John 1:1-2
B. Creation
1. Declaration - Psalm 90
2. Origin of Creation - Genesis 1:1-2a**
5. Creation for habitation - Isaiah 45:18; Genesis 2:4

I. From the creation to the flood 3975-2319 B.C.
A. Creation
1. The first five days (literal 24 hour days)
a. First day - Genesis 1:2b-5
b. Second day - Genesis 1:6-8
c. Third day - Genesis 2:-5-6; 1:9-13
d. Fourth day - Genesis 1:14-19
e. Fifth day - Genesis 1:20-23
2. The sixth day
a. Animals - Genesis 1:24-5
b. Man (64th generation) (Apx age 30) - Genesis 1:26; 2:7; 5:1
c. Garden of Eden - Genesis 2:8-17
d. God creates woman - Genesis 2:18-25
e. Creation concludes
(1) Names given - Genesis 1:27; 5:2; 3:20
(First Dispensation - Innocency)*
(2) Man's dominion over creation - Genesis 1:28-30
(3) Creation completed - Genesis 1:31; 2:1; John 1:3
3. Seventh (Sabbath) day - Genesis 2:2-3; Exodus 20:11
B. Fall of man and its consequences
NOW -Eternity Past - B.3. Satan cast out of heaven - Isaiah 14:12-17; Ezekiel 28:13-18

**(The passages below are left as Reese marked, should you desire to follow his outline:
Eternity Past - B.3. Satan cast out of heaven - Isaiah 14:12-17; Ezekiel 28:13-18
Eternity Past - B.4. Judgement of Creation - Genesis 1:2; Jeremiah 4:23-26)

I am not particularly fond of the title Judgement of Creation, but will leave that alone for now.  I moved Genesis 1:2a to be read along with 1:1, Jeremiah 4:23-26 will be read along with its companions, many, many days ahead :-).

My what a convoluted listing!

God saw...it was good.  Genesis 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25.  The 2nd day does not carry the distinction of having that statement - however, after reviewing all, God states in 1:31 - it was very good.

Good - This is the word Father used to declare that His creation was good, represents the 'good' in the tree of knowledge of good and evil, used when Father declares that it is not good that man should be alone.

Good - H2896 טוב - ṭôb - tobe - From H2895; good (as an adjective) in the widest sense; used likewise as a noun, both in the masculine and the feminine, the singular and the plural (good, a good or good thing, a good man or woman; the good, goods or good things, good men or women), also as an adverb (well).

  • H2895 - טוב - ṭôb- tobe - A primitive root, to be (transitively do or make) good (or well) in the widest sense.

A comparison:

Day 1 - God makes light, divides from darkness, DAY and NIGHT are established.
Day 4 - God makes 2 great lights, greater light for the day, lesser light for the night.  Though both are called great.

Evening and the morning constitute a day.  Genesis 1:5, 18, 13, 19, 23, 31

light - H216 - אור - 'ôr - ore- From H215; illumination or (concretely) luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.).

  • H215 - אור - 'ôr - ore - A primitive root; to be (causatively make) luminous (literally and metaphorically).

light - H3974 - מארה    מאורה    מאר    מאור - mâ'ôr  mâ'ôr  me'ôrâh  me'ôrâh - (1,2) maw-ore', (3,4) meh-o-raw' - From H215; properly a luminous body or luminary, that is, (abstractly) light (as an element); figuratively brightness, that is, cheerfulness; specifically a chandelier:

Light used in verse 3, 4, 5, 18 are 216; 15, 17 is 215; 16 is 3974

*I am NOT a dispensationalist.  Salvation has and always will be by grace, through faith.  Reese may be using this phrase to show seasons of mankind's responsibility.

Day 344

(D) Book of Hebrews
1. Christ is better than the best of Judaism
a. Better than the prophets and angels - Hebrews 1:1-14; 2:1-18
b. Greater than Moses - Hebrews 3:1-19; 4:1-16
c. High priesthood of Christ eliminates daily sacrifices - Hebrews 5:1-14; 6:1-20; 7:1-28; 8:1-5

Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. (Hebrews 2:1)

Therefore - what is the the therefore, there for?  :-D  That question has been asked by several teachers I have been privileged to sit under.  I am reminded as well, that the chapter and verse delineation in each book are of mans invention to assist in studying.  Sometimes there are unfortunate breaks which fragment the original thought of the inspired writer.

Therefore ~ earnest heed ~ heard ~ slip.  These were the words which captured my attention the most.  Therefore, what was spoken previously - :-D personally, I would say all of Chapter 1!

earnest heed - G4337 - From G4314 and G2192; (figuratively) to hold the mind (G3563 implied) towards, that is, pay attention to, be cautious about, apply oneself to, adhere to: - (give) attend (-ance, -ance at, -ance to, unto), beware, be given to, give (take) heed (to, unto) have regard.

heard - G191 - A primary verb; to hear (in various senses): - give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), ([shall]) hear (-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.

slip - G3901 - From G3844 and the alternate of G4482; to flow by, that is, (figuratively) carelessly pass (miss): - let slip.

What would the recipients of Hebrews have heard?  1:1 references that they would have heard God speak at various times and in divers manners to the fathers by the prophets.  This does NOT mean that there is any other avenue of salvation other than by grace through faith.  Every season of humanity, regardless of who was tasked with authority (whether individual or national) has obtained the inheritance (or the promise thereof) by grace through faith.  There are not many avenues to the Celestial City, there are not many ways, paths, etc.  Christ Jesus has from the beginning always been the only way to reconciliation and adoption by Father.

The Hebrews, and those who were attentive to the Truth, would have heard, studied, lived that which was recorded by the prophets.  All that was contained in what is now labeled as the OT.  I fear for the Bride at large, that she has forgotten from whence she sprang.  The roots which give nourishment.  This is not a call to return to a keeping of the law or rituals of Judaism, but a reflection on how poorly the Bride knows her history.

Rom 11:17  And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

Rom 11:18  Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

Rom 11:19  Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
Rom 11:20  Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

Rom 11:21  For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

We, as the Bride, ought not to be high minded, proud or puffed up against how poorly Israel received and kept the Truth.  The Bride is in tatters and not well prepared and/or ready for the return of her betrothed.  Father, You and You alone are the source and fountain of Truth, open the eyes of Your people to see how debauched we have become.  Lord, help us to repent and turn from seeking our own ways.  From desiring to please our temporary flesh in what is but a vapor of time and existence.  Help us to crave that heavenly abode, to stand before You not ashamed, having nothing to offer, nothing which will stand the test of Your fire.  O Father, how my heart weeps with the thought that I may stand before You and all that I have done this side of glory would be hay, wood and stubble.  O Father, call us to see beyond these temporal shores, to see the glimmer of light from that City, the eternal home of our King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Day 343

(C) Book of 1 Peter
1. The Christian's sufferings - 1 Peter 1:1-25; 2:1-20
2. Christ has suffered for us - 1 Peter 2:21-25; 3:1-22; 4:1-19
3. Exhortation to be strong and closing salutations - 1 Peter 5:1-14

1st Peter - Timeless Truths for Tough Times - I have been blessed to be in a ladies Bible study for the past 5+ years studying the book of 1st Peter inductively.  We are finishing verse 5 and will begin verse 6 sometime in 2011.  If you have never availed yourself of the opportunity to study inductively, here are a couple of articles to get you started:  How To Study Inductively, which has an in interesting side story about being observant with that which is placed before you.  The next is an 8 part article also titled, How To Study Inductively, they reference Websters 1828 dictionary for definitions of words.  I have always used the Strong's Concordance which can be found online here or here, or as part of the free Bible software at E-Sword, which also includes a variety of translations, dictionary and commentaries.

That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:7-9)

It was specifically verse 7 that I was focused upon, however I did not want to fragment the verse.  This verse reminds me of another about our works being tried by fire.

1Co 3:13  Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

This passage has been brought to my attention time and again.  Father's reminding me to be cognizant of HIS son's eventual return to claim His (Jesus') betrothed.  I am saddened with the thought that I may stand before Him and have nothing left but the foundation.  Will that which I do stand the fire of HIS scrutiny?  Will all that I have done this side of glory be burnt as if hay, wood and stubble?  Will ought of that which I thought to offer unto Him come through as gold, silver or precious gems?

1Pe 4:17  For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

1Pe 4:18  And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

We all need to take warning, the Master's return draws closer every day, we are commanded to be diligently looking and craving for that day.  We ought not to be as the unwise servant:

Luke 12:46  The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

Luke 12:47  And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

Luke 12:48  But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Day 311

L. Resurrection (first day) - cont.
5. Christ appears to Mary Magdalene - Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18
6. Christ appears to other women - Matthew 28:9-10
7. Guard reports to Jewish rulers - Matthew 28:11-15
8. The Emmaus Road conversation - Mark 16:12-13; Luke 24:13-32

10. Christ appears to astonished disciples - 1 Corinthians 15:5; Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-25

M. To the ascension
1. Christ appears to Thomas - John 20:26-29
2. Christ appears to seven disciples, miraculous draught of fishes (M-35) - John 21:1-24
3. The great commission given to about 500 - Matthew 28:16
<><><><><><><><><><><>
Mark 16:11 - And when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

Gill's commentary:
...they believed not; the words of Mary, and the other women, for they seemed as idle tales to them, Luke 24:11, imagining they were deceived with the sight of a spectre, or apparition; and fearing the news were too good and great to be true; forgetting the words of their Lord, that he should rise again the third day, and which had been so often repeated to them; and all this through stupidity of mind, occasioned by the trouble and consternation they were in.

Emmaus Road - Luke 24:16 - Their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

Gill's commentary:
...that they should not know him; that so they might not be surprised at once, as they would have been, had they looked at him, and discerned who he was; and that they might converse the more freely with him; and that he might convince them of their stupidity and unbelief, by proper arguments.

Gill's hitting that stupidity factor pretty hard.  :-)  Wonder how 'stupid' we must sometimes appear (if not more often) to our Lord.  We've got HIS revealed Word in front of us, a plethora of study resources and we still are woefully (and most times) deliberately ignorant of what HIS word says.

O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.  - Luke 24:25

Gill's commentary:

O fools; not in a natural sense, as if they were destitute of the common understanding of men; nor in a moral sense, as wicked men, and as they themselves had been in their unregenerate estate; nor in a way of anger and contempt, and with a design to provoke; wherefore Christ did not act contrary to his own rule, in Mat_5:22 but because they were so void of understanding in the Scriptures, and were so very ignorant of them, and were so blind as to the knowledge of them; particularly those which concerned the sufferings and resurrection of the Messiah, being influenced by the popular prejudices of education: he therefore expresses himself with much warmth, concern, and surprise, that he should have been so long with them, and they so long under his doctrine and ministry; besides the advantages of having the Scriptures, and being conversant with them from their youth; and which they daily read, and had heard expounded, and yet were so very senseless and stupid:

I like that the two disciples 'constrained' Jesus to stay as it was 'toward' evening.  Yet once their eyes were opened, they hot footed it back to the rest of the group.  Threescore furlongs from Jerusalem to Emmaus.
Three = 3 :-)
Score = 20
So 60 furlongs
Furlongs to miles = 0.125
0.125 * 60 = 7.5 miles
Quite a distance to travel on foot - 20 minutes to a mile (roughly) give them 15 since they were in a hurry :-) so...15 * 7.5 =  1.875 hours.  Give or take.  :-)

Then Peter's restoration:
Joh 21:15  So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (G15) thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love (G3568) thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs (G721)
Joh 21:16  He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (G25) thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love ((5368) thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep (4263)
Joh 21:17  He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (5368) thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest (5368) thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love (5368) thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep (4263)

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love - lambs, sheep, sheep.

G25 - Perhaps from ἄγαν agan (much; or compare [H5689]); to love (in a social or moral sense).

G3568 - From G5384; to be a friend to (fond of [an individual or an object]), that is, have affection for (denoting personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling; while G25 is wider, embracing especially the judgment and the deliberate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety: the two thus stand related very much as G2309 and G1014, or as G2372 and G3563 respectively; the former being chiefly of the heart and the latter of the head); specifically to kiss (as a mark of tenderness).

G721 - Diminutive from G704; a lambkin.

G4263 - Properly the neuter of a presumed derivative of G4260; something that walks forward (a quadruped), that is, (specifically) a sheep (literally or figuratively).

I found Matthew Henry's  commentary on verses 15-19 very enlightening.  Much too lengthy to include, but here is a link:

http://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/john/21.html

You will have to scroll down to 15-19 - I am going to share this one portion:

"Of some that have deceived us we say, “Though we forgive them, we will never trust them;” but Christ, when he forgave Peter, trusted him with the most valuable treasure he had on earth. "

Forgiveness and trust - an interesting combination.  I would, at this juncture, be forgiving and wary.  I am going to have to prayerfully meditate on this admonishment.
